When thinking about the idea of commission-only sales and how to look for the right opportunity in that realm, it’s made me think about some of my previous comments about sales positions in general, particularly in Look Beyond the Job Boards.

Sure, it would appear that there are plenty of sales jobs out there for people who want them. But can anyone care to venture why, it seems, that the same companies keep posting the same sales jobs over and over again?

It doesn’t seem to bode well for the would-be job hunter with a resume that includes a good deal of sales experience. While, at first, you might think that you’ve got yourself back on track with another sales job, it may be a case of fool’s gold. And before you know it, you’re back looking to add another sales job to the resume.

But why are you? Is it because you’re only experience has come from sales? As I mentioned in Look Beyond the Job Boards, the harsh reality is that companies want salespeople that will bring them back. They’re looking for those type of people who can carry the company on their backs and ride out this tough economic patch.

That lot, sad to say, is few and far between. Like any profession, it takes a master at their craft to be able to accomplish that. And chances are, you’re not that person. It’s not your fault. Like any other career, the best of the best represent a very small percentage of people. The same goes for sales, only the cream of the crop are much more visible, as those in the bottom 99 percent are part of the ever-revolving door.

Now may not be the time to ask where to find another sales job. Now may be the time to ask why you got into it in the first place. At this point, you may want to re-think your career goals and focus on re-tooling your plan towards another career.
